A Guide to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

What is the National Disability Insurance Scheme?

The NDIS is a government-funded national program to provide support for people with disability and their families.

What are the main features of the National Disability Insurance Scheme?

- The scheme is delivered in three parts:

- A general scheme (available to all Australians)

- A package of support services which individuals can access on their own or with the help of a carer.

- Support Services Plus will provide support for people with disability who want to live more independently and participate in community life.

- The NDIS also offers funding arrangements that give people with disability better choices about what they can do rather than being limited by an income test or waiting until they qualify for other government benefits.

Why Does Australia Have a National Disability Insurance Scheme?

Australia has always been a country of people with disabilities, and as our population ages, the number of Australians living with disabilities will only increase. We estimate up to 1 million people with a disability in Australia in 2023. The NDIS is about changing the approach to supporting people with disabilities. It's about providing funding for activities that help people with disability live independently, and it's also about changing the way we think of this population - maybe even eliminating the word "disability". The  NDIS program is a national movement beyond traditional social service programs. It takes a broader perspective on supporting and empowering people with a disability.

As of 1 July 2018, all Australians with a disability qualified for NDIS support. The government, private insurance commitments, and individual contributions fund the NDIS. The NDIS supports people who have a disability in three key areas: Support individuals with disabilities and their carers to live independently, socially and economically. Support people with disabilities to develop their ideas about how to live with their disability Support families so they can continue providing care for their loved one

How Does the NDIS Work?

The NDIS is a  way of supporting people with a disability rather than just providing them with services. The NDIS funds specialist support and supportive services to help people with disability live as independently as possible. The NDIS program starts when a person is assessed for eligibility, regardless of age or ability, and progresses through three stages:

● Stage one: integrating the person into their community

● Stage two: coordinating support in the community

● Stage three: managing support needs throughout an individual's life This means that everyone can access the same support, regardless of whether they have a disability or not.

Who Is Eligible for the NDIS?

The NDIS is a Government Scheme, so it's available to individuals with a disability who have worked and paid taxes for at least 12 months. They don't have to live in Australia to be eligible.

NDIS Funding and who pays for it?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme covers the following:

- Supports provided directly by trained specialists

- Supportive services that are not funded by other programs

Conclusion

The National Disability Insurance Scheme is designed to ensure people with disability have the same opportunities as their non-disabled counterparts. The NDIS is a pay-for-service system which means it is funded by the government and is not insurance.

What Does NDIS Offer?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a national program to support people with disabilities and their families. The scheme provides support for individuals with a disability, and their families, throughout their lifetime.

The scheme helps to improve the lives of people with disability and make it easier for them to live independently and participate in community life. It does this by providing funding for the following: • Supports provided to people living in the community (including home support, respite, companionships, outdoor equipment, personal assistance and support workers). • Supports provided in residential care facilities (including therapeutic multi-activities environments and communal areas). • Supports that enable people with disability to work (such as workplace adaptations).

What are the benefits of the National Disability Insurance Scheme?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a long-term plan that  provides support for individuals with disabilities and their families. The NDIS was Australia's first-ever national plan to support people with disabilities and their families throughout their lifetime. The NDIS aims to have people with disability living as independently as possible, with access to support from health, support and education services, and family and carers.
